Every year thousands of students apply for MBA admissions to different B-Schools in India. There are 1600 business schools in India spread across several cities and towns. The process of MBA admissions in India differs between institutions though major selection parameters may remain the same. In the top B-Schools in India such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), candidates have to appear for the Common Admission Test (CAT). Based on the marks scored, candidates are called by the various IIMs as well as other B-schools for a round of Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Autonomous B-Schools in India have other methods of conducting MBA admissions. |

Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) Admissions |
Eligibility for IIMs: A minimum three-year bachelor degree or its equivalent in any discipline as recognized by the AICTE/ Association of Indian Universities. Students appearing for their final year graduation exams are also eligible to apply.
Entrance Test: The six IIMs conduct a Common Admission Test (CAT), generally on the last Sunday of November every year. The written test is the first stage of elimination where a student's ability to perform under pressure is assessed. The testing areas comprise basic mathematics of Class X level, English and analytical & logical reasoning.
Application Essays and Reference Letters: In the top management institutes in India candidates are asked to write many essays together with their application form which they submit to the B-School. In the case of the IIMs, they only send an essay form to candidates who clear the written test. In the recent past, IIM Bangalore, require those candidates who have cleared CAT and have been short listed for the GD and PI round to furnish three letters of reference.
Group Discussions (GD)/ Personal Interviews (PI): Any candidate short listed for the GD PI process at the IIMs, attends both the group discussion and personal interview round. At the IIMs, GD is not an elimination round.
Admissions: Admission to IIMs is offered based on the collective scores of CAT, GD and PIs. Admission notification starts from the second week of March and continues up to the end of April. |
XLRI, Jamshedpur Admissions |
Eligibility: For admissions to PM&IR and BM programs, the applicants are required to have three years of Bachelor's degree in any stream. Also postgraduates in any discipline can apply. Students who complete their final examination by June of the academic year are also eligible to apply for admission to the programs starting in that year.
Entrance Test: Xavier Admission Test (XAT) is the entrance test conducted at XLRI, Jamshedpur. For admissions to XLRI, candidates have to first register for XAT and obtain the XAT ID and password. XLRI Prospectus can be obtained from select State Bank of India branches on payment of Rs. 800/-.
The XAT score is also a criterion for admission to other B-Schools such as XIME Bangalore, BIM Trichy, XIM Bhubaneswar and LIBA Chennai.
Group Discussions (GD)/ Personal Interviews (PI): Candidates who clear the XAT are called for Personal Interview, which is elimination round. There is no Group Discussion round conducted at XLRI.
Admissions: The list of final candidates is announced in the month of May. Selected candidates are required to pay the first installment of fees as a final step in the admissions to XLRI.
